Concept study · Mapping Projection mapping concepts on a historic facade in Vienna — video mapping studies by MGL Videoservices

Concept study — not an executed project, the facade is shown as an example only

  Applications

Where projection works.

From a 30 m² stage backdrop to an entire heritage facade — almost any surface is projectable. The most common uses:

Facades & historic buildings

Building projection and architectural mapping on facades, monuments, churches and palaces — light instead of intervention, not a single nail in the wall. We respect the architecture and work on the structure only.

Cruise ships & vessels

Projection onto hulls, superstructures and sails — for christenings, departure events and on-board shows. Moving water and light worlds on one of the most spectacular canvases there is.

Stage & indoor events

Stage projection, set design and set extension for galas, congresses, product shows and concerts — the backdrop becomes a living scene.

Product launch & brand moments

A product emerges from nothing, a logo grows across the wall: mapping creates brand moments people talk about — at trade fairs, store openings or press events.

3D mapping & objects

Precise 3D video mapping on cars, models, sculptures and special objects — the projection follows the exact form, giving edges, depth and motion.

Seasonal: Advent, Christmas & festivals

Christmas projections and seasonal light installations for city centres, malls, hotels and municipalities — atmosphere that returns every year.

  What can be mapped?

Almost any surface becomes a canvas.

Surfaces we plan for — from everyday facades to genuine one-offs. Projection mapping (also called video mapping) works on nearly any surface: flat, curved, smooth or complex. The more unusual ones we scope with you and deliver together with our specialist network.

  The technology

Enough light, precisely on target — on any surface.

Large surfaces need a lot of light and millimetre-precise alignment. We plan every projection in advance on a 3D model and match the projectors exactly.

Projector stacking

Several high-output projectors overlaid (stacking) — for the brightness large outdoor facades demand.

Warping & soft-edge

Multiple projectors blended seamlessly and warped onto the building — one image, no visible seams.

Media servers

Professional media servers play your show frame-accurate and on cue — triggered by music, timecode or live signal on request.

Indoor & outdoor

From the conference room to a night-time projection outdoors — including weatherproof housings, cabling and backup power on request.

Planning · Mapping Technical planning of a facade projection with three projectors and mapping grid — video mapping in Vienna, Austria

Planned on the model first: projector positions, overlap and mapping grid

Planned ahead, perfect on site.

We survey your surface (3D scan on request), simulate projector positions, brightness and overlap on the model — and know before the first build day what will work. That saves time on site and money in the budget.

Fully white-label for agencies and event producers on request.

How your show comes to life

From idea to light moment.

You bring the occasion and the surface — we handle everything in between.

01 — SURVEY

Surface & concept

We survey the surface, clarify goal and message, and design a mapping concept — including a first visualisation.

02 — CONTENT

Animation & design

We design the mapping and produce the moving content with our creative and partner network — from logo/gobo to elaborate 3D mapping.

03 — PERMITS

Advisory on approvals

For outdoor projection we advise on approvals, neighbour and emission topics and supply the technical documents — the organiser obtains the permit.

04 — SHOW

Build & operation

Build, stacking, alignment and operation during the event — you see only the finished image.

  For international agencies

Projection mapping services in Vienna — your white-label unit in Austria.

Flying a full projection crew to Austria adds cost and logistics you may not need — because we are already here. We are your local unit: English-speaking project management, our own kit plus a network of specialists for high-brightness outdoor, ships and special rigs, and 24 years of knowing exactly how this city works.

We slot into your production the way you need us — as a hired mapping team, as a full local partner, or entirely white-label under your flag. One contact, one invoice; for business clients based in another EU member state we invoice under the reverse-charge procedure — VAT is accounted for in your own country. Your client sees your brand throughout; that discretion is part of the service.

Where we advise on approvals

Outdoor projection in public space needs approval — and obtaining it is the organiser’s legal part. What we contribute:

→ Site & location assessment

→ Guidance on emission & traffic conditions

→ Technical documents for the application

→ Power, rigging & build logistics

→ Time windows for build and strike

  Six signatures

One building, many stories.

The same facade, six completely different moods — from crystalline to floral to a digital wave. We develop the look that fits your occasion.

Six projection mapping concepts on a historic Vienna facade: Crystal Growth, Floral Bloom, Golden Flow, Digital Pulse, Ocean Waves, Geo Abstraction

Concept study — not an executed project. This visualisation shows what a mapping proposal looks like before the first projector runs: Crystal Growth · Floral Bloom · Golden Flow · Digital Pulse · Ocean Waves · Geo Abstraction. The facade shown serves as an example only and was not actually projected on.

  FAQ

Projection mapping, clearly answered.

In projection mapping, moving image is projected precisely onto a three-dimensional surface — a facade, an object, a stage. The content follows the exact shape, so edges, windows and ornaments become part of the animation. The result looks as if the building itself has come alive.

It depends on surface size, required brightness (number of projectors), content effort and duration. A small indoor stage projection is far cheaper than mapping an entire outdoor facade with a stacked projector setup. Describe your plan — you receive a transparent fixed quote.

Almost anything: facades and historic buildings, stage backdrops, walls, floors, objects and vehicles, water screens and haze — even cruise ships. Bright, matte surfaces are ideal; for dark or glossy surfaces we plan in more light accordingly.

The larger the surface and the more ambient light, the more light output (ANSI lumens) the projection needs. If a single projector is not enough, we overlay several precisely — that is called stacking. This gives a rich, powerful image even on large outdoor facades.

In public space usually yes — it concerns surface use, light emission towards neighbours and traffic, and build logistics. Obtaining the permit is the organiser’s or owner’s legal responsibility. We advise from experience on the questions that typically come up and supply the technical documents, so you are well prepared.

Usually yes — precisely because projection is residue-free: we work with light only, nothing is mounted, glued or altered. After the show the facade is untouched. Specific conditions are clarified in advance with the relevant authorities by the organiser.

As a rule yes. We use weatherproof housings that reliably protect the equipment and plan weather windows. In heavy rain, fog or storm we agree safety and fallback options together — safety and image quality come first.

Content from one source: we design your mapping and produce the moving content with our creative and partner network — from simple logo and gobo projection to elaborate 3D mapping. What we do in-house and what specialists from our network contribute is set out transparently in the quote. We also play back existing content, of course.

Constantly — it is a core part of our business. We work under your production’s flag, in your templates and workflow. One contact, one invoice; for business clients based in another EU member state we invoice under the reverse-charge procedure — VAT is accounted for in your own country.

Yes — as your local production partner in Austria we work across the whole country and, on request, beyond into the DACH region. For ships, cruise terminals and international productions we are mobile and bring the complete technology with us.

You have the surface — we have the images for it.
